Popp was named German Footballer of the Year twice, in 2014 and 2016, and in February 2019 was named captain of the national team. Early life. Popp attended Gesamtschule Berger Feld in Gelsenkirchen, one of four facilities certified as "elite schools of football" by the German Football Association.
