The Story of Bo-Kaap
EWNThis is a three-part series about the Bo-Kaap and gentrification. It reflects on the history, present and potential future of the iconic neighbourhood and the changes and challenges it is facing.
It looks at the history and founding of Bo-Kaap and how it was affected during apartheid. It tracks the changes to the historical businesses in the area and the new ones that are opening and it considers what should guide the development of the area. It covers the controversy of the current developments but also those of its history.
It aims to provide both the real story of the well-known suburb and serve as a resource to inform the debate about its future and the balance to protect heritage while enabling development.
