Elton Howard JrI am an insecure Black man in therapy, trying to navigate life without losing my mind while dealing with my childhood trauma and the current state of our country. I was born to teenage parents in Orange Mound, Memphis, Tennessee. My mom was 16 and my dad was 19 when I was born. My parents didn’t stay together long after that. About four years later, my mother met someone, got married, and gave birth to my younger sister. When I was eight years old, I witnessed my mother being shot by her estranged husband. She was shot five times, including once in the head. By the grace of God, she survived.
